Rev. Ted Hicks

Edward Hicks
Ted regularly led excellent services at the Denman Island United Church from 2016-2021. He also provided loving and attentive Pastoral Care to our congregation and facilitated our challenging pro-vision process. In December, 2021, Ted and his wife, Tammy, moved to Manitoba to be closer to their family there. Ted continues to offer shorter, on-line reflections to our community under the title: Pilgrim Postcards

Ted is a retired Presbyterian Minister with experience in congregational settings, inner-city storefront ministries, and hospital chaplaincy.  Raised on the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island, Ted’s education and work has taken him to Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Washington, DC, before he returned to the Island in 2007.  In addition to the Presbyterian Church, Ted has worked several times with the United Church, as well as with the Christian Reformed Church in Winnipeg’s North End and the independent ecumenical Church of the Saviour in DC.   Ted is gratefully married to Tamsen Matheson and is a proud father of 2 adult children, 2 adult stepchildren, and an equally proud grandfather of 5 grandchildren – the extended family stretching from the Yukon to Saskatchewan to Manitoba.  He is a long-suffering faithful fan of the Blue Jays and has Bob Dylan’s first album and pretty much every one since.  In his earlier years, Ted worked in the theatre – including as Director of the Indigenous Theatre School in Ontario – and this experience continues to influence the way he approaches worship.  Leading up to and since his retirement, he has nurtured his innate contemplative nature through his Centering Prayer practice, by training as a Spiritual Director, and by exploring the Celtic thread in the Christian tradition.  Ted respects inclusivity and diversity and understands spiritual formation as leading to social transformation.  For Ted, God is the energy of Love incarnate in all existence.
