Sunday Worship

Sunday worshipSince 1889, on most Sunday mornings our small wooden sanctuary has been home to a United Church service. For most of those years, the services were traditional and would include hymns, scripture passages, a psalm, and a sermon. In more recent times, Eucharist would be offered approximately once a month.

Although some elements of the traditional service have been maintained, over the years the structure and sermons have opened up to better reflect societal changes, to be more inclusive and relevant to the Denman community and to involve more participation from attendees.

Churches have an appalling history of dogmatism. We’re not into that. We are exploring what it means to be human and live lovingly. We have more questions than answers.Thecrimes committed in God’s name are human, not divine in origin. We endeavor to draw near to Source, Mystery, Life, Light, Love.

The collection of people currently attending Sunday Worship at DI United have come from various backgrounds. We share a desire to retain the best of the Christian tradition and Jesus’ teaching while being open to new movements of the Spirit.

One of the beautiful things about our Sundays is the importance of music to us. The Denman Island United Church choir is an important and vital part of our church. Sunday mornings include singing and sometimes the choir is the majority. We love music and creative expression.

On Sundays when we meet, we share a potluck lunch together after our service. Come join us!

If you live on Denman or are visiting the island, come and join us at 10:30 on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays. Or if you live afar please follow us on FB, subscribe to our newsletter and enjoy the online reflections. All are welcome!
